=================================================================================== INSTALLATION HINTS IMAGIC-4D for Microsoft Windows 14. May 2012 =================================================================================== Part 1 Requirements Part 2 Installation of the MPI software (only for parallel processing) Part 3 IMAGIC-4D license Part 4 IMAGIC-4D installation Part 5 IMAGIC-4D restrictions Part 6 IMAGIC-4D post-installation Part 7 IMAGIC-4D documentation =================================================================================== Part 1 Requirements =================================================================================== 1) MS Windows XP 32-bit or Windows 7 64-bit operating system 2) 500 MB free disk space to install the IMAGIC software (incl. MPICH2) 3) 1+ TB free disk space for image processing (the more the better) 4) Recommended: 4+ GB RAM, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor =================================================================================== Part 2 MPI installation (only if you want to use the parallel IMAGIC programs) =================================================================================== 1) MPICH2 v1.4 from Argonne National Laboratories can be found on the webpage: http://www.mcs.anl.gov/research/projects/mpich2/ For 32-bit operating systems, download the Win IA32 Binary, e.g. mpich2-1.4-win-ia32.msi For 64-bit operating systems, download the Win X86_64 Binary, e.g mpich2-1.4-win-x86-64.msi To install MPICH2 you must have administrator privileges. These privileges are necessary because the MPI applications (IMAGIC parallel programs) are launched by a process manager named smpd.exe which is a MS Window service and installing such services are restricted to administrators. Double clicking on file mpich2...msi will start the installation. The Microsoft installer will guide you through the installation. The default installation path is C:\Program Files\MPICH2 or C:\Programme\MPICH2 (german Windows version) During the installation you are asked for a passphrase. This passphrase is used for the protections of the process manager. Do not enter your user password. The same passphrase must be used on all nodes on which you want to run the parallel IMAGIC programs. For a detailed description of the installation, please refer to the installation manual included in the distribution. 2) Install MPI on all nodes which you want to use for parallel processing. 3) You probably need to specify an account (user, password) which MPI uses to run the parallel programs on all nodes. This account/this user must be available on all nodes and must have read+write+execute permissions to your current working directory and read+execute permission to the IMAGIC directory. Use the command mpiexec -register to specify this account (user name and password are encrypted and added to the MS Windows registry). You may wish to validate the encrypted credentials (for a specified host) using the command mpiexec -validate [-host hostname] Furthermore the smpd (MPICH2 process manager) must be installed. To do this, use the command smpd -install (-phrase ) Usually the programs need to be called by entering the complete path: \ - For a complete list and description of the commands, please refer to the user manual included in the distribution. 4) Note that MPICH2 must be installed BEFORE the IMAGIC programs ! 5) MPICH2 license Copyright Notice + 2002 University of Chicago Permission is hereby granted to use, reproduce, prepare derivative works, and to redistribute to others. If you have obtained your license file from Image Science (imagic.lic), please copy it into the directory where you want to install IMAGIC. 2) Note that an extended license is required to run the parallel IMAGIC programs. =================================================================================== Part 4 IMAGIC-4D installation =================================================================================== 1) Download the latest release of the IMAGIC-4D package. Image Science's download webpage is: www.ImageScience.de/download 2) Select the installation file which is designed for your operating system (32-bit Windows XP or higher or 64-bit Windows 7). 3) The installation file comes as a msi (Microsoft Installer) package. Double-clicking the file will start the installation and a graphical user interface will guide you through the further installation process. 4) Copy the IMAGIC-4D license file (imagic.lic) into the installation directory. =================================================================================== Part 5 IMAGIC-4D restrictions =================================================================================== 1) The use of special characters in directory or file names is NOT permitted. =================================================================================== Part 6 IMAGIC-4D post-installation =================================================================================== 1) Automatic update notification This feature gives information about the availability of a new IMAGIC-4D releases. When calling IMAGIC (the IMAGIC-4D supervisor program) a routine is started which compares the installed version with the one available on the Image Science download webpages. If a new update is available, a message is printed showing the current and new version dates. The routine is only called when the IMAGIC-4D supervisor ("IMAGIC") is started. If no internet connection is available at runtime, the routine may take a while to complete. You can also call this checking routine by using IMAGIC command CHECK-VERSION. To disable the automatic update notification you can remove (or rename) the executable "$IMAGIC_ROOT/misc/check-version.exe" The program is available for Linux, Mac and MS Windows operating systems. =================================================================================== Part 7 IMAGIC-4D documentation =================================================================================== 1) Various manuals on how to use and work with IMAGIC-4D are available on the webpages http://www.ImageScience.de/manuals =================================================================================== Image Science Software GmbH Gillweg 3 D-14193 Berlin Germany info@ImageScience.de (C) Copyright Image Science Software GmbH ===================================================================================
